Member-only story
The UK has European Union supercomputing consortium. This has been done with much less of a fanfare and then the Government announcement last year that the UK going to be a supercomputing superpower. I at the time, that this would be ambitious as the UK had none of the top 10 supercomputers in the world and was only the 10th most prolific chip fabricator, and second in Europe to Germany; the UK produces about ¼ of the volume of chips that Germany produces. Europe’s most powerful supercomputer, the only European supercomputer in the top 10, is in Finland. However, the then proposed budget would be extraordinarily useful, particularly so in an environment where it was able to leverage further investment. Let’s hope it’s used for science not expensive “text auto-completion”.
